I fiorentini, erano 3.000 cavalieri e 30.000 fanti.

An African safari is arguably one of the most alluring and easily understood dreams of our time. Just the thought of an African safari evokes thoughts of adventure, a journey through nature's greatest spectacle, a glimpse of the earth before man. African Safari is an exploration of all that the word safari encompasses, from journeys on horseback and dugout canoes, the quiet drifting of a balloon and the tension of waiting on foot to the smell of dung, soil and the rain. African Safari is an intimate odyssey through the great wilderness of Africa and an eye on its wild denizens, spiced with the echoes of a romantic history. African Safari is divided into eight chapters South Africa (Kruger & the Kgalagadi)Namibia (Etosha, Damaraland and Kaokaland)Botswana (Okavango, Chobe, and Linyanti)Zimbabwe (Mana Pools and the Zambezi) Zambia (North and South Luangwa)Tanzania (Ngorongoro and the Serengeti)Kenya (Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo) Rwanda & Uganda (Parc des Volcans and Mgahinga).

"A really phantastic book for African wildlife lovers! The more it is regretable that I received it damaged because of improper packaging in a caton which was far too big for the size of the book. On top of that the paperwork was wrong so that the German Post was not able to deliver and I had to drive to the customs office myself in order to release it."

  • We have visited several of these places and are enthralled with safari lodges and their culture. Enjoy reminiscing with this book!
  • Great book to remember our trip! Book was not wrapped, which I do not like because it damages the book & cover
  • A really phantastic book for African wildlife lovers! The more it is regretable that I received it damaged because of improper packaging in a caton which was far too big for the size of the book. On top of that the paperwork was wrong so that the German Post was not able to deliver and I had to drive to the customs office myself in order to release it.
  • What this lacks in colour photographs it more than makes up for in colourfull stories from even more colourfull characters
  • We saw this book when we visited Chobe Game Lodge and really wanted it, but they wouldn't ship it and it weighed to much to take along on the rest of our trip. I was very happy to see it at when I checked for it once I returned home. It made a great Xmas present for my husband and I also bought a second copy for some friends that had visited that area of Botswana an a previous trip with us.
  • I gave this as a gift, but thought it looked great. The pictures are very spectacular. last four word as required.
  • Great Book, amazing pictures....
  • This review is second hand as it was a gift. However, the couple that received it, having been to Africa twice on safari and planning another one in the future, absolutely raved about it.

To some, having the attention of four princes might be a dream come true, but for Corina, it means four times the trouble.

Escaping burning buildings, living off scraps, being hunted by vamps—those are storms she knows how to weather. It’s having the entire world observe as she and the Dynasty’s golden boys engage in a blood bond that has her shaken. For all she knows, it won’t even produce a cure for the mysterious blood sickness like they’re hoping, which could mean she’ll be put to death anyway.

And to make matters worse, as a side-effect of the bond, she finds herself falling for the very beasts she once pledged to remove from power by any means necessary.

Talk about a conflict of interest.

In the second installment of THE VAMPIRE’S MARK, will it be Corina’s mission or her emotions that prevail?
***
This is BOOK TWO in THE VAMPIRE’S MARK series.
Series order is as follows
The Vampire’s Mark 1 Dark Reign
The Vampire’s Mark 2 Hell Storm
The Vampire’s Mark 3 Cold Heir
The Vampire’s Mark 4 Crimson Mist

Note This is a slow-burn, upper young adult/New Adult, RH series. You have my word there’s no insta-love between these pages whatsoever. Instead, you’ll be immersed in a rich plot and an imaginative alternate-reality where vampires don’t just exist. They rule. The eventual connection between Corina and these four sexy, vamp princes will be well-deserved and intense. There are certainly sexy times in this series, and the heat level is synonymous with the young adult/new adult genres. Thanks for checking out the series and enjoy!

THE VAMPIRE’S MARK is an action-packed, paranormal romance involving vampire royalty and the humans who fear them. This series is an upper YA/NA crossover perfect for fans of Bella Forrest’s “A Shade of Vampire”, E.M. Knight’s “The Vampire’s Gift”, and Sarah J. Maas’s “A Court of Thorns and Roses”.

This book is for anyone who loves
* Shifter Romance (Vampire Romance) and Dark Fantasy Romance

"Buckle your seatbelts everyone...our little Blackbird aka Corina has a lot happen in this book. The blood bond begins with a few of the four Princes. How was she to know the overwhelming feelings that would come from it!! Of course the bonus here is it also messes with the guys LOL. Maybe this is what it will take to open their pompous minds and hearts! Maybe see things FINALLY as they are and not what they'd been brainwashed to believe? Cori and the guys begin to learn things about themselves, each other, and the world around them. However they also quickly learn there are people in the shadows working against them....and these particular shadows are oh so close. Danger Will Robinson, danger!!! Take the plunge and see how everyone works together, or not. Can the danger be revealed? There's a cliffhanger at the end, and I have an idea someone we meet will be a MASSIVE shocking revelation to one of the Prince's. I'm hoping we will learn more in the next book. These men have no clue. They thought Cori was being obstinate and rebellious? What they haven't clued into yet, but they WILL is how huge her heart is. Loyal to those she cares about, fierce, independent, and will fight to her death for what or who she believes in. Watch out, I think things are about to explode in the next book 😉💗."

The Vampire Mark 2 Hell Storm Reverse Harem Romance eBook Rachel Jonas Reviews

  • A book you definitely do not want to miss out on!! This smoldering and smexy reverse harem has everything you could want. It's fan-yourself-sexy with a twisted and sinister side. In the first book, Cori, our brave and beautiful heroine, is set on a mission to save human-kind from their oppressors. She attends the gala with the most elite of elite of vampire-kind. In an attempt to gather intel for her team, she is spotted by Prince Julian, Silas, Levi, and Roman. Cue the smolder!! These sultry men will have you drooling and daydreaming. And if book 1 was amazing, book 2 was even better!! This book brings a whole new level to book boyfriend fantasies! I wholly recommend this series. 100% 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!!
  • I'm floving the surprises in this series. I did not see some of the twists coming. I love how Jonas surprised me and keeps adding so much anticipation for the series. SO many questions. Once it got going it was a wild ride. Corina continues to shine through her circumstances. I loved learning more about each of the guys and am so curious what happens with them. Cannot wait for the next book.
  • Well written book without the porn of many of these Reverse Harem books. Good characters, strong plot, some action, lots of angst and cool world building. All up a good read whether you are looking for the Reverse Harem experience or just a good fantasy/adventure book.

  • Step 1One-click, Step 2 Read, Step 3 Thank me later! This series does not disappoint! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this series and you MUST read in order. I am so impressed with this story & what a new and refreshing take on the vampire genre! Each book packs a serious punch of thrilling action, suspense, romance, world building.. all the right ingredients that make a book carry that little something that sets it apart from others & leaves you swooning.
    **SPOILER ALERT**
A slow-burn, reverse harem saga in which the MC, Cori, is a flawed, yet very strong & sassy female vigilante whose clandestine operation rescues fellow humans in a world where “Ianites” (aka vampires) have established a strict monarchy, with humans being at the very bottom of the food chain. The world is separated into 4 quadrants with each being ran by a King, and each king being replaced by their devastatingly handsome heirs in a year’s time. One of the 4 Kings is Emperor and rules over all. After a mission gone wrong lands Cori in the care of Julian (the heir to the Emperor’s throne), the heirs and their human “Doll” enter into a whirlwind of scandal, secrets & eventually an attempt to escape a punishment of death leads the four Heirs Julian, Salis, Levi & Roman to agree to a blood bond with Cori. However, the blood bond is not only completely uncharted territory, it opens up another Pandora’s box for the group, just when they thought that they’d remedied the bullseye target on their backs. And although Cori is undeniably attracted to the four Princes, she yearns for home and her family of rogue human friends that she had to leave behind unwillingly. So while the Princes’ scheme and plot to keep themselves and Cori alive and out of the frying pan, Cori is busy scheming to escape and reunite with her friends, unwittingly putting not only herself but the Princes back into the frying pan and turning up the heat!

Best New series I’ve read all year and I can’t wait to bite into the 3rd installment in the series The Vampire’s Mark Cold Heir by Rachel Jonas. Huge thanks to the author for creating such amazing works, please keep them coming!

An electrifying, dazzlingly written reckoning and an essential addition to the national conversation about race and class, Survival Math takes its name from the calculations award-winning author Mitchell S. Jackson made to survive the Portland, Oregon of his youth.

This dynamic book explores gangs and guns, near-death experiences, sex work, masculinity, composite fathers, the concept of “hustle,” and the destructive power of addiction—all framed within the story of Jackson, his family, and his community. Lauded for its breathtaking pace, its tender portrayals, its stark candor, and its luminous style, Survival Math reveals on every page the searching intellect and originality of its author. The primary narrative, focused on understanding the antecedents of Jackson’s family’s experience, is complemented by poems composed from historical American documents as well as survivor files, which feature photographs and riveting short narratives of several of Jackson’s male relatives. The sum of Survival Math’s parts is a highly original whole, one that reflects on the exigencies—over generations—that have shaped the lives of so many disenfranchised Americans. As essential as it is beautiful, as real as it is artful, Mitchell S. Jackson’s nonfiction debut is a singular achievement, not to be missed.

Survival Math Notes on an AllAmerican Family Mitchell Jackson 9781501131707 Books Reviews

  • I read an excerpt of this book in a magazine, and before I even finished, I cut myself off because I knew I had to order the book and read the whole thing. I've never read such a profound, blunt, and informed reckoning of one's past as this. It also does a phenomenal job of framing the author's life in the context of his circumstances which he establishes by drawing from an extensive knowledge of recent to ancient history.

While I've read quite a few books dealing with similar topics, this one spoke to me in ways others haven't since it was written by a contemporary of mine. While I grew up listening to the same rap music Jackson describes in the book and got heavy into education as did he, the life that to me was mainly portrayed in gangster rap songs and movies of that era was one I was mainly experiencing as if viewing in a fishbowl. Jackson himself lived it, and he had the courage to tell it like it is for the world to examine.
  • Way tooooo long, wasn’t what I thought couldn’t keep my mind in it. A waste of money.

"Warning She spares no detail!" —Erik Larson, bestselling author of Dead Wake

In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of nineteenth-century surgery and shows how it was transformed by advances made in germ theory and antiseptics between 1860 and 1875. She conjures up early operating theaters—no place for the squeamish—and surgeons, who, working before anesthesia, were lauded for their speed and brute strength. These pioneers knew that the aftermath of surgery was often more dangerous than patients’ afflictions, and they were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. At a time when surgery couldn’t have been more hazardous, an unlikely figure stepped forward a young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister, who would solve the riddle and change the course of history.

Fitzharris dramatically reconstructs Lister’s career path to his audacious claim that germs were the source of all infection and could be countered by a sterilizing agent applied to wounds. She introduces us to Lister’s contemporaries—some of them brilliant, some outright criminal—and leads us through the grimy schools and squalid hospitals where they learned their art, the dead houses where they studied, and the cemeteries they ransacked for cadavers.

Eerie and illuminating, The Butchering Art celebrates the triumph of a visionary surgeon whose quest to unite science and medicine delivered us into the modern world.

"I was absolutely riveted, start to finish. I read whole chapters of it out loud to my SO because I felt it was too fascinating not to share. Anyone from a layperson with a passing interest of medical history to a medical professional will appreciate the research, passion and thought put into this book. I enjoyed it so much that as soon as I finished it, I bought two more copies for gifts.

Giving a low star review based on *your* misconception that the book would have images because the authors social media has images is unfair to the author and, quite frankly, childish. • I'm only four chapters in, but couldn't wait to finish it to put in my review! I've seriously gone into work every day this week with some new interesting tidbit of information that I've learned (and likely been amazingly disgusted by). I'm a self-professed history nerd (and I majored in history), but this book is truly one anyone could read and enjoy. The author's writing style makes the narrative flow and helps you feel immersed in the time (for better or worse depending on how squeamish you might be) while still conveying such a vital piece of history and not overindulging in the gruesome parts. She paints the scene exactly as it would have been - which is certainly a shock when you think about how things are now!

History buffs, science lovers, people in the medical profession, fans of the morbid, fans of shows like Bones (that maybe always hid their eyes during the gruesome scenes and yet always ended up watching), anyone looking for a little real-life old-school horror for their October... READ THIS BOOK.

I know that I can't wait to finish this book (and I'll update my review if needed once I finish).

  • I learned two essential things reading ‘The Butchering Art.’ Society is benefited by the good health of all the individuals within it, and that innovation has been fought by the general population throughout human history. This book casts a light on people in the medical field in the past in a way that makes you understand that each milestone was pivotal. All points of discovery through the scientific method were crucial for new heights of understanding. So thankful for trailblazers like Joseph Lister, who had the courage to question the things accepted as facts in his time. Dr. Fitzharris takes you on a journey of the past that traces the steps through history and outlines why we know what we know about the human body and the world that surrounds us. She marries science with history in a captivating way and undeniably doesn’t spare any of the brutal details. Beautifully written and dark by nature. Definitely a must read for lovers of science and for those who aren’t faint of heart.
  • My hardback copy is here!
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this through NetGalley, and seriously, the second I finished it, I went and preordered it. This is one of the best and my favorite books of the year!
Even though I just read this, I'm already rereading this.
In short, This book really delves into the Victorian surgery practices and thanks to Joseph Lister, for forever changing what we know about surgery today. Seriously highlighted and now tabbing seems like half of the book. So fascinating and well researched.
Looking through the hardback copy, there is an index in the back and around 30 pages of notes on where the research came from!
I would recommend this to anyone interested in medical, history, science, an amazing well-researched biography....ok nevermind-I would recommend this to everyone.
  • It didn't take long for me to be sucked right into this book. It only just arrived today and I'm already deep into it finding that I can't put it down! The picture Lindsey Fitzharris paints with her words is inviting and gruesome all at the same time. I have read a few other books of a similar vein and have found most of them to be informational but dry and unentertaining. There are certainly no problems with that here as it is equal parts entertainment and educational. I couldn't recommend it enough!

"I stumbled upon her first cookbook a year ago. It helped me learn to cook with a variety of fruits and veggies. Truly a great book! But for the past 2 days I have been reading through ‘Love and Lemons Everyday’, I am OBSESSED!! I’m not one to write many reviews, but I must share my excitement for this book. It is truly a work of art, from the beautiful pictures and artsy effects, to the mouthwatering recipes that inspired me to think outside of the box when it comes to vegetables. My husband is plant-based, so the recipes in here have inspired me to put effort and creativity back into my cooking. I love the side notes on some of the vegetarian recipes for a vegan option. I am excited to see how many recipes I can sneak into my kids’ diet. I highly recommend this book, you won’t be disappointed."

Love and Lemons Every Day More than 100 Bright PlantForward Recipes for Every Meal Jeanine Donofrio 9780735219847 Books Reviews

  • Let’s begin but stating that this is a big cookbook loaded chock full of recipes- over a 100 which would make it a great choice for anyone looking for a comprehensive guide to a mostly plant based diet ( note it’s not vegan as it does include eggs and butter in some recipes ) or a beginner book.

After beginning with some guides to plant based protein, grains and legumes, managing waste and some basic tips, there are ten different chapters Breakfast; Snacks and Starters; Soups; Salads; Dinner; Side Dishes; Desserts; Drinks; Homemade Extras and Essential Sauces and Spreads.

The thing I like most about this book is the fact that it keeps it simple in terms of ingredients, recipes and equipment needed which makes this book accessible to all. It is simple to follow and many recipes are very quick to prepare.

One of my favorite chapters is the snacks and starters as there are so many simple ideas that are easy to whip up a beet dip, easy to make almond cheese, queso made of butternut squash. There are also a great selection of unique soups such as lemon miso spring greens and lasagna soup with vegan ricotta. There is also a great idea to make stock with left over scraps.

There are some innovative salads that are perfect for the summer and not the typical ones you sees in other cookbooks. And the same applies to the main dishes and sides - they are not the usual run of the mill and are dishes I want to make! I included a picture of the cauliflower gratin which was a quick make and delicious. It is a side but I found it filling enough to use as a main.

Among the desserts is a great page full of little data balls you can make to keep on hand and there are just enough recipes which I like as many vegan books seem to be over indexed in this area. This is followed by a great drink section which contains both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and I love the section on extras - vegan ricotta salsas and simple snacks, sauces and dips.

This is probably the most innovative vegan cookbook I own; that wins this with simple ingredients and recipes. It’s loaded with bright, colorful pictures to demonstrate the end result and is a book I will use often.
  • I stumbled upon her first cookbook a year ago. I highly recommend this book, you won’t be disappointed.
  • I love love love this blogger. Her recipes are consistently fantastic with unique blends of flavors. I do wish this book contained more entrees rather than chapters on drinks and desserts. It is easy to find solid drink and dessert recipes whereas it is must more difficult to find vegetarian main courses that are healthy, filling, and delicious.
  • I am I love with this cookbook. The pictures are absolutely beautiful and the content is amazing!! I just received it today and cannot wait to start making these recipes! My family is not vegetarian, but we do want to incorporate more vegetables into our meals and this cookbook has so many delicious options!!
  • I’m not vegetarian, but I absolutely adore Jeanine’s recipes. She has a way of making vegetables taste so delicious! Even vegetables I thought I hated (mushrooms!) somehow taste amazing... omg the mushroom white bean pot pie recipe is EVERYTHING!

What’s wonderful about the recipes is that they’re flexible enough for me to make with meat if I want to - the chimichurri potato salad seems perfect for summertime grilling. I also love all the charts and tips - it’s so inspiring and makes me think of how to change things up. That chart with homemade salad dressings is so fun and I can’t wait to try some of the dressings on grain bowls. Plus the Waste Not, Want Not, section is so practical because didn’t even know I could use cauliflower cores and broccoli cookbook stems!
This cookbook is also essential for creating my weekly meals and grocery list.
  • This book is beautiful-just like the first Love and Lemons cookbook is! I have both. I absolutely love that this is broken down by meal type and the grids of salad dressings and how too cook grains is also a nice feature. They really packed a ton of information into this book. The nice thing about all of these recipes is that even if you aren't necessarily vegan/vegetarian, you could still make them. For example, they don't really use dairy and use a lot of almond milk. However, I still love dairy so I make the recipes and just sub in dairy or eggs where necessary and I can still have a mostly plant based meal. The biggest change for me has been that I can incorporate a lot more veggies in my diet and actually enjoy eating them!
  • Jeanine and Jack’s new cookbook is an absolute delight! It’s beautifully designed and full of incredible recipes that are healthy, delicious, and completely approachable. Their recipes are inclusive and consider various dietary restrictions, so everyone can feel welcome at your table. My family honestly uses multiple recipes of theirs every week, and I am so excited to add this cookbook to my recipe repertoire. Thank you, Jeanine and Jack for your amazing work!!
  • I bought this for my mother in law, but now I need my own copy. This book, was awesome. Hard cover, way bigger than I expected. I love the lay out and design. Bright and cheery. The pages are great quality and I love how informative this book is also. Not just recipes.

The Hidden Life of Trees What They Feel How They Communicate Discoveries from a Secret World Audible Audio Edition Peter Wohlleben Mike Grady HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books Reviews

  • As a young lad in Germany, Peter Wohlleben loved nature. He went to forestry school, and became a wood ranger. At this job, he was expected to produce as many high quality saw logs as possible, with maximum efficiency, by any means necessary. His tool kit included heavy machinery and pesticides. This was forest mining, an enterprise that ravaged the forest ecosystem and had no long-term future. He oversaw a plantation of trees lined up in straight rows, evenly spaced. It was a concentration camp for tree people.

Wohlleben is a smart and sensitive man, and over the course of decades he got to know the tree people very well. Eventually, his job became unbearable. Luckily, he made friends in the community of Hümmel, and was given permission to manage their forest in a less destructive manner. There is no more clear-cutting, and logs are removed by horse teams, not machines. In one portion of the forest, old trees are leased as living gravestones, where families can bury the ashes of kin. In this way, the forest generates income without murdering trees.

Wohlleben wrote The Hidden Life of Trees, a smash hit in Germany. It will be translated into 19 languages. The book is built on a foundation of reputable science, but it reads like grandpa chatting at fireside. He’s a gentle old storyteller explaining the wondrous magic of beautiful forests to befuddled space aliens from a crazy planet named Consume. He teaches readers about the family of life, a subject typically neglected in schools.

Evergreen trees have been around for 170 million years, and trees with leaves are 100 million years old. Until recently, trees lived very well without the assistance of a single professional forest manager. I’m serious! Forests are communities of tree people. Their root systems intermingle, allowing them to send nutrients to their hungry children, and to ailing neighbors. When a Douglas fir is struck by lightning, several of its close neighbors might also die, because of their underground connections. A tribe of tree people can create a beneficial local climate for the community.

Also underground are mycelium, the largest organisms yet discovered. One in Oregon weighs 660 tons, covers 2,000 acres (800 ha), and is 2,400 years old. They are fungi that send threads throughout the forest soil. The threads penetrate and wrap around tree roots. They provide trees with water, nitrogen, and phosphorus, in exchange for sugar and other carbohydrates. They discourage attacks from harmful fungi and bacteria, and they filter out heavy metals.

When a limb breaks off, unwelcome fungal spores arrive minutes later. If the tree can close off the open wound in less than five years, the fungi won’t survive. If the wound is too large, the fungi can cause destructive rot, possibly killing the tree. When a gang of badass beetles invades, the tree secretes toxic compounds, and sends warnings to other trees via scent messages, and underground electrical signals. Woodpeckers and friendly beetles attack the troublemakers.

Forests exist in a state of continuous change, but this is hard for us to see, because trees live much slower than we do. They almost appear to be frozen in time. Humans zoom through life like hamsters frantically galloping on treadmill, and we blink out in just a few decades. In Sweden, scientists studied a spruce that appeared to be about 500 years old. They were surprised to learn that it was growing from a root system that was 9,550 years old.

In Switzerland, construction workers uncovered stumps of trees that didn’t look very old. Scientists examined them and discovered that they belonged to pines that lived 14,000 years ago. Analyzing the rings of their trunks, they learned that the pines that survived a climate that warmed 42°F, and then cooled about the same amount — in a period of just 30 years! This is the equivalent of our worst-case projections today.

Dinosaurs still exist in the form of birds, winged creatures that can quickly escape from hostile conditions. Trees can’t fly, but they can migrate, slowly. When the climate cools, they move south. When it warms, they go north, like they are today — because of global warming, and because they continue to adapt to the end of the last ice age. A strong wind can carry winged seeds a mile. Birds can carry seeds several miles. A beech tree tribe can advance about a quarter mile per year (0.4 km).

Compared to trees, the human genome has little variation. We are like seven-point-something billion Barbie and Ken dolls. Tree genomes are extremely diverse, and this is key for their survival. Some trees are more drought tolerant, others are better with cold or moisture. So change that kills some is less likely to kill all. Wohlleben suspects that his beech forest will survive, as long as forest miners don’t wreck its soil or microclimate. (Far more questionable is the future of corn, wheat, and rice, whose genetic diversity has been sharply reduced by the seed sellers of industrial agriculture.)

Trees have amazing adaptations to avoid inbreeding. Winds and bees deliver pollen from distant trees. The ovaries of bird cherry trees reject pollen from male blossoms on the same tree. Willows have separate male trees and female trees. Spruces have male and female blossoms, but they open several days apart.

Boars and deer love to devour acorns and beechnuts. Feasting on nuts allows them to put on fat for the winter. To avoid turning these animals into habitual parasites, nuts are not produced every year. This limits the population of chubby nutters, and ensures that some seeds will survive and germinate. If a beech lives 400 years, it will drop 1.8 million nuts.

On deciduous trees, leaves are solar panels. They unfold in the spring, capture sunlight, and for several months manufacture sugar, cellulose, and other carbohydrates. When the tree can store no more sugar, or when the first hard frost arrives, the solar panels are no longer needed. Their chlorophyll is drained, and will be recycled next spring. Leaves fall to the ground and return to humus. The tree goes into hibernation, spending the winter surviving on stored sugar. Now, with bare branches, the tree is far less vulnerable to damage from strong winds, heavy wet snows, and ice storms.

In addition to rotting leaves, a wild forest also transforms fallen branches and trunks into carbon rich humus. Year after year, the topsoil becomes deeper, healthier, and more fertile. Tree plantations, on the other hand, send the trunks to saw mills. So, every year, tons of precious biomass are shipped away, to planet Consume. This depletes soil fertility, and encourages erosion. Plantation trees are more vulnerable to insects and diseases. Because their root systems never develop normally, the trees are more likely to blow down.

From cover to cover, the book presents fascinating observations. By the end, readers are likely to imagine that undisturbed forests are vastly more intelligent than severely disturbed communities of radicalized consumers. More and more, scientists are muttering and snarling, as the imaginary gulf between the plant and animal worlds fades away. Wohlleben is not a vegetarian, because experience has taught him that plants are no less alive, intelligent, and sacred than animals. It’s a wonderful book. I’m serious!
  • Why people have to give a book one star only because it's "above their understanding" is beyond me. That one star should go to the reviewer, not to the book. Then, about five people gave this book rave reviews accompanied by two stars. ????? And then there were reviewers who first cited their multiple PhD's, BS's and Masters degrees, to show they are REAL scientists, and then went on to say that that is why they are all rattled and horrified by the simplicity and anthropomorphism of Wohlleben's approach.

Let's please grow up. A grey and dour, soulless "scientific" approach to a subject will not engage average mortals, and those are the ones who need to know. The wish for such an approach doesn't identify you as a scientist either; it identifies you as a grey and dour, soulless person with no interest in mystery. This book is not written for you.

This book is written for normal people, who are interested in trees and nature and not afraid of learning facts that upset their worldview, and who are willing to accept that there are things we cannot, yet or fully, explain. This relatively recent field, of the interconnectedness of trees and of the forest as a giant organism, is unbelievably interesting and will, no, must, have far reaching consequences for our thinking about the environment, and by extension for our thinking about ourselves. I am not a scientist, and I don't care for a purely scientific approach to life. I am also not afraid of anthropomorphism - it is a valuable tool for us humans (anthropoi) to understand the world around us. Already 2,500 years ago Protagoras revolutionized philosophical thinking by positing that "man is the measure of all things". For most of us, that will remain the norm for a long time to come.

Also, trees are not aliens, they are more like us than we think. There is a lot in the trees' behavior that they share with us. The need to survive powerfully and procreate is common between man and tree.

Wohlleben writes beautifully and lyrically. That is not a sin and doesn't take away from his being a consummate scientist. One can be a scientist and at the same time be in awe of mystery.

In a very recent interview with The Guardian, Wohlleben said "scientists over the last 200 years have taught us that nature works without soul.” This book successfully discredits that approach, which has been ready for the scrap heap for too long.

This is a terrific book that can be fascinating to scientists and non-scientists alike. It has enough footnotes to allow for wider study of the subject for the intellectually adventurous.

The collaboration of Wohlleben and Dr Suzanne Simard of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada has led to a TV documentary on the subject, "Intelligent Trees". The DVD is available on .
  • Loved the book. Live on a tree-filled island in the summer and have always "felt" the companionship of the trees but thought I was crazy. Not any more. Bought it for my four children because they will "know" those same trees too.

When Percy Jackson receives an urgent distress call from his friend Grover, he immediately prepares for battle. He knows he'll need his powerful demigod allies, Annabeth and Thalia, at his side; his trusty bronze sword, Riptide; and...a ride from his mom.

The demigods race to the rescue, to find that Grover has made an important discovery two new powerful half-bloods whose parentage is unknown. But that's not all that awaits them. The Titan lord, Kronos, has set up his most devious trap yet, and the young heroes have just fallen prey.

Hilarious and action-packed, this third adventure in the series finds Percy faced with his most dangerous challenge so far the chilling prophecy of the Titan's curse.

"Great series and family friendly, there's no adult (sexual) content that I remember which makes me happy as an adult reader who reads YA books specifically to avoid that.
Fun storyline and interesting story line that I would qualify as family friendly :)"

The Titan Curse Percy Jackson and the Olympians Book 3 Audible Audio Edition Rick Riordan Jesse Bernstein Listening Library Books Reviews

  • When I first read the *Percy Jackson* series, I was a bit underwhelmed. I mean, I had heard so much about how awesome it was, and it seemed just such a let-down. It appeared to me to be, quite frankly put, a weaker version of *Harry Potter*. Now, I know that isn't fair or accurate, but that was my first impression. While the second book in the series, *The Sea of Monsters*, helped to change my mind on this, it was still a bit underwhelming. Yes, this is not just a takeoff of *HP*, it is it's own unique series. Not only are there many differences beyond the surface-only similarities, but I learned recently (as of the writing of this review) that Riordan started writing this series before *HP* was published, so, yah, not based on *HP*. So critics who use this argument, including *myself* at first, are just silly. I'm admitting I was an idiot, yes.

As I said, though, the second book still didn't quite wow me. The whole narrative felt like basically an endless series of cliff-hangers with little to no character development and not enough plot. The cliff-hangers seemed to be far more numerous than most quest books in fantasy settings. Now, this isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the first two volumes, but just that they didn't quite (other than some interesting stuff such as likable characters and references to myths) *do* it for me, so to speak. This third book, however, really did make me a major *Percy Jackson* fan, and was absolutely a great read. The rest of the review will show why.

The plot is simple. In a rescue mission to save two fellow demi-gods, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and their new friend Thalia, encounter trouble. Though they save the twin half-bloods, Annabeth goes missing, and to make matters worse, so does a powerful goddess ally, Artemis.

Of course, a quest is in order. But the questions are rather more complicated than one might think in this case. Normally, these quests are, of course, quite dangerous. But in this case, the sense of danger, really the *fact* of danger, is more persistent. Because a prophecy from the Oracle is that at least two of the members of the quest will not make it back alive...

While the plot is relatively straight-forward at first, the narrative and plot developments this time were quite a bit more complicated. Not only did Riordan expand on the mythology of the series, and the connections to Classical Greek myths, but the structure was different. Gone was the nearly every chapter cliff-hanger, with the accompanying desperate rushes from one danger to the next, one clue to the next. In it's place was a slower and more long-term story progression.

Don't get me wrong. The sense of excitement and adventure was just as strong, but the story was a better one in this way. This is because there was more time taken to spend more time exploring the characters and their thoughts and the world-building, as well as both delving into the past of this world and laying down groundwork for future plots. This all was a net plus for the book and made it far, *far* better than the predecessors.

Included in this are tidbits that answer the big questions that some might have, including, why, oh why, do the Olympians not *do* anything to remedy these problems themselves. Well, the answer is that they are a) kinda personality-driven, and this interferes with some proactiveness, as they have their own stuff to attend to and their personalities dictate this, and b) related, they are *busy*. Not only do they have the duties they have always had, but they are also dealing with the fact that the coming hostilities with the forces of Kronos are causing other supernatural gods and god-like beings to cause problems that make their jobs harder. For that matter, there is a delicate power balance that too much action on the part of *anyone* will upset.

The reason I liked this one as well is that the characters are kinda coming into their own and beginning to grow up. Annabeth is becoming more mature and able to forgive and see others' points of view more. Meanwhile, Percy is faster on his feet where he can handle things without constant directions. Though he still isn't the strategist that Annabeth is, and thus doesn't do as well as when he's teamed up with her, he still acquits himself admirably.

Grover, though, is a disappointment here. He's reduced to little more than comic relief. That annoys me in that while he was the weakest member of the quest, he's still a knowledgeable and capable guy. Or should be. I hope that he gets more impressive again in coming books.

I can't say much about other characters so as to not give away their roles, but just to say that Riordan does a good job with fleshing out their characters and arcs in a way that really makes them vivid to the reader and gets you to care about them.

I can honestly say now that I really enjoy this series and that it has become one of my favorites.

    Highly Recommended.

    Rating 5/5 Stars.
  • SPOILERS MAY BE AHEAD!!!!!

I'm so stunned, I can't make physical human noises right now!!!! This book was
soooooooo good!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait until I read the next one!!!! In this book, Percy goes on another quest, this time with new characters, the Hunters. I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about the Hunters. They seemed like girls who had gone through a rough time and needed to feel a sense of sisterhood and gain immortality. At the time, I wasn't sure if they could be considered "good guys" or "bad guys". The book started out jumping right into action. Percy, Annabeth, and Thalia were on there way somewhere in Percy's mom's car. Sally was driving them to meet Grover, who was s stationed at a military boarding school. I kind of felt like I had missed out on somethings that had happened between the Sea of Monsters and The Titan
's Curse. I didn't know if that was an okay to thing or not, but I think I'm okay with it, because Thalia, Percy, and Annabeth had seemed to develop a friendship. Anyway, there are two new half-bloods discovered and there is a monster at the school who wants the kids to go to Krono's side. So, there is a battle and everything, the Hunters are introduced, and ANNABETH DISAPPEARS!!!!!!!!!! I could not believe it, and I was very sad because Annabeth is one of my favorite characters. So, the story plays off from there. The book was great, and I recommend it to people who enjoy an adventure in modern day Greek Mythology.
  • Another great book by Rick Riordan. I had a terrible time getting my son to read. I love to read and am a teacher so this was particularly disturbing for me. I finally got him hooked on the I Survived Series by Lauren Tarshis (which he loves) but he could read them in one night and I wanted something a little more challenging. He wasn't sure he wanted to read about Greek Gods but listened to me and read the first chapter. I haven't been able to get him to put the books down since. Thank God has two-day shipping! I can have the next book ready and waiting so when he finishes one he just jumps into the next!

These books are highly entertaining for young boys (and girls too) and provide a nice challenge for young readers. They are exciting, high energy books that keep readers wanting more. So if you have a kiddo that wants something exciting to read, this is it! I'll be honest, I read the series too and wasn't disappointed! Great books!
  • Loving the series so far, and this book was another great one. Great humor, themes, and adventure. This book made me laugh, cry, and more than anything just smile. I love each book I have read so far, they are written so well and these books are truly timeless. I am 20 I am enjoying every second of this series. No matter your age you will love these books.I am so happy I ordered the last two in the series so I can continue reading and will have no wait time between books.
  • The premise of the series is that Greek mythology and its beasts, gods, etc. are actually real. That fact makes for a fun adventure. It's definitely an "intermediate" book. Think Empire Strikes Back recap start and cliffhanger end. The plot of the series has been well contained and reminders of previous facts are conveniently sprinkled around.
My 9 yo and I have read them together. We had very cool chats from it.
  • Great series and family friendly, there's no adult (sexual) content that I remember which makes me happy as an adult reader who reads YA books specifically to avoid that.
Fun storyline and interesting story line that I would qualify as family friendly )
  • Not the best Percy Jackson story, but of course still a fantastic one, is an interesting and good read from start to finish, and being a big fan of the series, I can easily recommend, though first two stories should of course be read first.
